The ink on the first day is barely dry. It’s time to get some sleep because games are only 12 hours away. It is going to be difficult to top Thursday’s action. In fact, it might be damn near impossible.

These are the games that have the difficult task of following up Thursday’s opening round games:

2 West Virginia v. 15 Morgan State (12:15pm)
6 Xavier v. 11 Minnesota (12:25pm)
5 Temple v. 12 Cornell (12:30pm)
4 Purdue v. 13 Siena (2:30pm)
7 Clemson v. 10 Missouri (2:45pm)
3 Pittsburgh v. 14 Oakland (2:55pm)
4 Wisconsin v. 13 Wofford (3:00pm)
5 Texas A&M v. 12 Utah State (4:55pm)
8 Gonzaga v. 9 Florida State (7:10pm)
7 Oklahoma State v. 10 Georgia Tech (7:15pm)
5 Michigan State v. 12 New Mexico State (7:20pm)
1 Duke v. 16 UAPB-WIN winner (7:25pm)
1 Syracuse v. 16 Vermont (9:40pm)
2 Ohio State v. 15 UC-Santa Barbara (9:45pm)
4 Maryland v. 13 Houston (9:50pm)
8 California v. 9 Louisville (9:55pm)

Early games…

We will see early if the Big East can recover from their 1-3 start as WVU and Pitt will see action.

There has been some debate about the Temple-Cornell game. It’s an interesting issue because maybe people have the winner of that game going onto the Sweet Sixteen. That is a match-up I am looking forward to.

Two of the teams that people were riding for upsets also play early — Siena and Utah State. Can they keep the list of upsets growing?

Late games…

A lot of big names late on Friday. Two #1’s hit the floor — Duke and ‘Cuse lay their respective 16 seeds while #2 Ohio State takes on UC Santa Barbara.

The Cal-Louisville match-up might say wonders as to just how overrated the Big East is, and/or just how much underrated the Pac-10 is.

Can things get anymore chaotic today?

Follow @O_W_S on twitter for more tournament thoughts. You may also view all of our March Madness coverage here.

The anticipation is unparalleled for this day. The opening day of the tournament is a sensory overload like no other. I started listening to games in the office, and worked my way to viewing the end of the Baylor-Sam Houston game (while still in the office).

With only the games before the dinner-break complete there seemed to be as many close games as a fan could ask for. Moreover, we had a number of big to moderate upsets already in the books.

Upsets…

13 Murray St. over 4 Vanderbilt [buzzer beater]
11 Old Dominion over 6 Notre Dame
10 Saint Mary’s over 7 Richmond

If these upsets were not enough, it were some of the close games that sealed the deal on a great start for these afternoon games.

Close Overtime Battles…

7 BYU over 10 Florida, 99 – 92 2OT
2 Villanova over 15 Robert Morris , 73-70 OT

Even the Baylor game was much, much closer than the final score might make you believe. San Houston St. gave the Bears all they could handle for 35+ minutes, but could not close out the game.

The Lone Blowout…

The Kansas State Jayhawks were the only high seed to handily beat their opponent. I’m sure everyone who has K-State getting past ‘Cuse and into the Final Four is feeling good at this early stage of the game.

Dinner Break Game…

The lone game in the middle of the day was the 5 Butler v. 12 UTEP which was scheduled for 4:55 pm ET. This one looked to be another barn burner at half. UTEP had a 6 point lead. Butler came out in the second half, and behind a flurry of SIX early Shelvin Mack 3-points, Butler ran away with the game. In the process they made more 3-pointers than any other first round team ever had.

It was an awfully disappointing second half for Tony Barbee’s Miners.

Wrap-up…

We really saw almost anything we could have wanted during the first 8 games this afternoon. The scary thing was we still had 8 more games to go!

——————————

The Early Evening Entertainment…

Throughout the first half it was Georgetown looking like they were to be on the losing end of the next major upset. They never got their legs under them and Ohio University came out slinging the three-ball. Their shots were going down and there was nothing that the Hoyas could do about it. Another upset, and the biggest of the day.

Additionally, a good game out in Oklahoma City between Northern Iowa and UNLV. Personally this was a top 3 hardest game for me to pick. In the end the game was tied with 35 seconds left. UNI took the clock down under 5 seconds before nailing a 3 from at least 3 feet behind the stripe.

It was a heart breaker for the Rebels.

The other gem of the early games was at the HP Pavilion in San Jose — 11 Washington and 6 Marquette. A 19-6 run by the Huskies, in the middle of the second half, made it a one score game. From there Washington was relentless, ultimately going up a bucket with 1.7 seconds remaining. After two timeouts from Marquette and another from Washington, the Golden Eagles would settle for a half-court heave. It was no good an Washington gets the Pac-10 a tourney win. Conversely, the Big East drops to 1-3.

The Late Slate…

Lehigh tried to stay with Kansas but seemingly every time the game would get close, Kansas would prove to be too much.

In the battle for the most random state in the tourney, 14 seed Montana kept it close early with 3 seed New Mexico. Wyoming was a no show for this battle but could have been a contender.

There were two games that were head and shoulders above the rest. The first was the Wake Forest-Texas game — a one point game with 10 seconds when James drove for Texas and was fouled. He made the first and missed the second. Overtime… of course!

Onto the San Diego State-Tennessee game. Also, under 10 seconds and a one possession game. Specifically 5 seconds with SDSU taking the ball over half court needing a three to tie, but it was not meant to be. Good thing, one OT game after midnight is enough for us to handle.

So it was back to New Orleans we went for the end of the Wake-Texas duel. It looked like it was going to be a rather anticlimactic finish. Texas was in control through out the extra period. But the way today went I would have expected nothing less than what we ended up getting. Wake cut Texas’ lead to just 1 after a three pointer went down with 15 seconds to go.

A handful of missed free throws allowed Wake to make a shot with just a seconds left on the clock, and they will move on to play Kentucky.

This made the 3rd OT game of the day — already more than were in the entire tournament last year.

I could not have asked for a better day on college hoops!

Those are my first round picks for the 6 major “BCS” conferences. It reads pretty true to how I have felt about the conferences all year.

At the same time it is almost a caricature of my thoughts … Big East and Big 12 a combined 14-1 while the Pac-10 goes winless.

Good luck with your bracket (unless you are in any of my pools).

If you have been reading thus far this week, you might have seen the Against The Spread series that I did. I looked at each first round match-up over the last two tournaments. What I learned is that the oddsmakers are good. Really good.

This makes sense though. By March the bookmakers have a whole lot of information to go on. On the other hand, at the beginning of the season they are sometimes just as unsure about how a team is going to perform as the rest of us.

In conclusion, now is not the time for serious gambling. Now it is time to sit back and marvel at the greatest sporting event that this country has to offer. That is just what I plan to do.

It all starts today. This is Christmas morning, and right now I am 8 years old waiting for the rest of the house to wake-up so the fun can begin. Noon can’t come soon enough.

Forget work, school or recreation … Here is all the information you need to know today…

These are all of today’s games in order from early to late games:

7 Brigham Young v. 10 Florida (12:20pm)
3 Baylor v. 14 Sam Houston State (12:25pm)
2 Villanova v. 15 Robert Morris (12:30pm)
4 Vanderbilt v. 13 Murray State (2:30pm)
2 Kansas State v. 15 North Texas (2:50pm)
6 Notre Dame v. 11 Old Dominion (2:55pm)
7 Richmond v. 10 St. Mary’s (3:00pm)
5 Butler v. 12 UTEP (4:55pm)
8 UNLV v. 9 Northern Iowa (7:10pm)
1 Kentucky v. 16 East Tennessee State (7:15pm)
6 Marquette v. 11 Washington (7:20pm)
3 Georgetown v. 14 Ohio (7:25pm)
1 Kansas v. 16 Lehigh (9:40pm)
8 Texas v. 9 Wake Forest (9:45pm)
3 New Mexico v. 14 Montana (9:50pm)
6 Tennessee v. 11 San Diego State (9:55pm)

You should be able to watch, or at least listen, to the games at work/school. This can be done online from the March Madness On-Demand website.

Don’t worry about your boss coming by, CBS and the NCAA have thought of that.

Now all you have to do is figure out when you want to sneak off for that 1:45 minute “lunch”. And by “lunch” I mean a couple beers at a local restaurants bar so you can roll your sleeves up and watch the games.

I suggest going for the end of the first 3 games and the start of the second 3 games. This means about 2 o’clock ET. Then, you can listen to the last few games from your desk before the “dinner break” when games slow down.

Happy Madness all!
