It is being reported that the Monday Night Football game from this past Monday drew over 17M viewers. This makes it the largest cable audience of the entire year and the 5th largest of all time.
The top four are other Monday Night Football games from ’07, ’08 and ’09. The sixth biggest audience belongs to High School Musical 2 on Disney Channel. The list is finished off with three more NFL games and an episode of Larry King Live.
The reason this sticks out to me is because, although these are two good teams this year, there is no real reason that a massive national audience needed to see this game. This is a week three game, and a game that ended up being quite ugly in fact.
This just goes to show just how powerful the NFL is. There is so much money being brought in that they literally don’t know what to do with it. I mean, they literally might end up bringing down the house here with a work stoppage.
The NFL should learn from Disney here. They were hitting hard with High School Musical up until 2007-2008. During this time they had Zach Efron in his prime. They were raking the cash in hand over fist. I’m sure Disney and Efron would have done anything to find a magic fountain of youth to keep Efron 18 years old forever.
The moral of this story is clearly; do not ruin a good thing NFL and NFLPA. Do not let this get to a work stoppage in 2011.
