Dat Franchize Boy
The San Francisco Giants extended 2-Time NL Cy Young Winner with a 2 year, $23 million contract today rather than going to arbitration.
This, along with the Seattle extending Felix Hernandez, is great news for baseball fans. Look, I think we’re all tired of seeing a young phenom prospect and commenting, “Wow, he’s gonna look good on the Red Sox or the Yankees in a couple of years.” It makes for a much for compelling season when these mid-market teams like San Francisco and Seattle invest in making a push for their divisions, a goal that’s very attainable for both; the Giants are fielding a young team with a lot of potential while the Mariners are looking to steal back the AL West with the Angels reeling with a great 1-2 punch at the top of their rotation.
It’s still unfortunate, though, that it’s the small payroll teams that are making a joke of Major League Baseball. A guy like Adrian Gonzalez, who only made $3 mil last year, is going to be shipped out of San Diego after this year, if not sooner. And we can only hope the Royals hold on to their one-man show, Zack Greinke. I guess until then, the $1 dollar hot dogs nights will have to make up for the lack of competitive teams.
