UFC 109: Relentless Fight Analysis

UFC 109 will go live this super Saturday from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. This card was again hit hard by injury much like the last UFC card. Still 109 has a good number of names that even the casual fan should know.

Specifically, I want to note that Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, not to be confused with his twin brother Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira, was forced to step out from his  scheduled fight against Brandon Vera due to an ankle injury.

Additionally, Josh Koscheck was forced out due to an injury just a few weeks  ago.

On to the people actually fighting on Saturday. I will start at the top with the two co-main events.

Randy Couture Vs. Mark Coleman

The first time I saw Mark Coleman fight was in 1998. Yup, 12 years ago. He was actually part of the reason that I became a fan of mixed martial arts — unfortunate for him…

Pete Williams nearly took Coleman’s head off and I was hooked.
I never thought that in 2010 I would be watching Mark Coleman and Randy Couture go at it, and as viable and legitimate fighters. It shows how incredibly hard these two work.
I find it impossible to think that Couture can lose this one. It looks like most everyone agrees; Couture is at -500 now.

Nate Marquardt Vs. Chael Sonnen

Next up is a potentially intriguing match-up. Dana White has made public what we already knew, this fight is for a shot at getting your ass-kicked by Anderson Silva. Yay!
Marquardt has already lost to Anderson. However, I know that is the fight I would like to see. Nate’s loss was nearly 3 years ago. With a win Marquardt will be 6-1 since. That 1 loss is very controversial. Marquardt was docked 1 point in Round 2 of his fight with Thales Leites for kneeing the head of a downed opponent, and another point in Round 3 for strikes to the back of the head. Still, one judge gave the fight to Nate. He could easily be 7-0 after Sunday.
If you couldn’t tell — I’m going with Nate “The Great”. He is an even bigger favorite than Couture, coming in at -525.

Other Fight Picks

Betting:
Bargain of the night: Matt “The Terror” Serra (-155)
I really feel like Trigg and Serra are similar at this stage. If Serra can win the wrestling game then it’s his.
Potential upset of the night: Paulo Thiago (+160)
You are getting a good price on him and Swick is coming in on short notice.
Fight of the night:
Phillipe Nover Vs. Rob Emerson
Both guys have lost two in a row and need to come out with a win.
KO Alert:
Brian Stann Vs. Phil Davis
Simple; someone is not making it to the end of this one.
