Tommy West had some interesting advice for the Memphis athletic department during his post-firing press conference.
West said, “We’ve got to help this football program… or do away with it.” He went on to say that he was referring to the resources that the university provided for the program.
Obviously the basketball program has been the priority for Memphis over the past decade. John Calapari had some of the nicest facilities in the country built for his team and, needless to say, apparently Coach West’s team wasn’t exactly given the same treatment.
Coach Cal is gone and now so is Coach West. Memphis is in a big transitional period here. There have been rumors of the desire to join a BCS conference. Although the basketball team appears to have locked up some nice recruits for this season–the school must be careful to avoid falling on the national map. If the football program is on a clear downturn, the basketball program is their only national showcase. Lets be honest–that has been the case all along.
