UFC 100 Results and Retrospective

mir-lesnar-postfightDana White is feeling good this morning. Last night he witnessed Brock Lesnar 100% legitimize himself as the UFC Heavyweight champion. To the hometown crowd’s displeasure, Lesnar put a beating on interim champ Frank Mir. After the fight the fans really let Lesnar have it as their fellow Las Vegan lay on the mat. Lesnar who has been short on words since coming to the UFC was feeling go enough to ramble off the best post-fight quote in the last 100 UFC’s and maybe the next:

Frank Mir had a horseshoe up his ass. I told him that a year ago. I pulled it out of him and beat him over the head with it. [Now] I’m going to drink a Coors Light. That’s right a Coors. Bud Light don’t pay me nothing. I may even get on top of my wife tonight.

He told it like it is. The UFC marketing team could not have been happy that Lesnar pointed to the middle of the Octagon and badmouthed Bud Light but damn, I think even they had their jaws on the ground as Lesnar spoke.

Lesnar walked off into the night with Sable on his arm. The way every champion should. Also making out well last night were the fighters receiving fight night bonuses. Last nights event drew 11,000 fans for a live gate of $5.1 million which is second only to Chuck Liddell vs. Tito Ortiz II, which grossed $5.4 million. That made Dana White a very generous man. The fight night bonuses which usually sit near $60,000 were raised to $100,000.

Fight of the Night  — Alan Belcher vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama
Knockout of the Night — Dan Henderson
Submission of the Night – Tom Lawlor

$100k on top of their base pay. That is some serious compensation. And for those in the know, Bruce Buffer really did the famed “Buffer 360” while introducing Brock during the main event.

The event was a success. Those watching on PPV only got to see the 4 main card fights which is a rarity. The reason being that none of them ended extremely quickly. It was not a bad thing though.

Alan Belcher vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama was a battle that had a somewhat controversial decision. Joe Rogan declared that Belcher got robbed as teh referee raised Sexyama’s hand. One of the judges actually scored the fight 30-27 for Akiyama meaning he won all three rounds. Belcher clearly won the first round and the third was as close as it could be. I guess hendo-bispingthat $100k makes Belcher feel at least a tiny bit better.

The Hendo-Bisping fight was a standing war for a round and a half ending with a classic knock out by Dan Henderson. That’s right the wrestler KO’d the world champion British kickboxer.

The third fight to air was the GSP-Avles bout for the Welterweight strap. GSP was never in much danger after a few rounds passed and both fighters lost their knock out power. Still, Alves hung in there with the champ and gained the respect of both St-Pierre and the fans watching. To be a true contender Alves might need to rethink fighting at 170 with that amount of weight he carries around before cutting for a fight.

Fedor-EmelianenkoThe main event did not disappoint either. It was pretty simple as Lesnar used his size to control Mir once on top of him. After stopping Mir with a number of unchecked punches to Mir’s face, as Mir lay on the mat, Lesnar then reacted to the fans booing by flipping them off with both hands as he walked around the Octagon. It seemed like some genuine emotion from the new undisputed champ.

After the bouts came a momentous quote from UFC President Dana White:

This whole Fedor thing has been going on and on and on. I keep saying this and that about him and he keeps waiting. Eventually, Fedor’s going to be here. I want Fedor. I want him to come to the UFC and everything else. [Lesnar] just became the heavyweight champion. We’ll end up getting that deal done. And then we’ll do Brock vs. Fedor, and it’ll be a huge fight.

White wants to see Lesnar stick it to Fedor. Stick it to all the Fedor worshipers who have crowded him as the hands down best heavyweight in the world.

I suppose the first idea would likely be a proposed December bout as the UFC and Pride have always liked to end the year with a gigantic super-fight. That would entail getting a contract finalized very soon.
