Give McNair a Break

McNairI’m sure by now everybody who has any idea what football is, and even some who don’t, have heard that Steve McNair was shot to death by his mistress before she turned the gun upon herself.  I also agree with many people, this is not the most flattering, or most noble way to have your life concluded, but c’mon people, give the guy a break.

The debate on Sportscenter the other day was whether or not this would taint his legacy as a quarterback, or even his legacy as a person.  I personally don’t think it should.  Does Joe Namath’s drinking and womanizing affect his legacy as a quarterback? No.  I also am not saying Air McNair was anywhere near as great a quarterback as Namath, but what NFL player, what professional sports figure for that matter, has not done their fair share of philandering.  Kobe? Still going to be regarded as one of the greatest players, and he was accused of rape, not just adultery.

All I am saying, is that the only thing in McNair’s life that we know of that he did that was truly immoral was have an affair.  He was a great football player, supported many charities, and even took the high road when the Titans locked him out of training facilities.  He did not shoot his mistress than shoot himself, all he did was have a mistress (albeit a bad choice of mistresses).  Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and mine is that people should lay off of a great quarterback who contributed to charity, and just happened to have a mistress.
