An MMA fight. On TV. That is not promoted by the UFC. That is worth watching. They tend to be rare nowadays but we have one gracing our presence this weekend.
For those unfamiliar; Strikeforce is a promotion that is based in San Jose, California. Its events have been shown on NBC and HDNet over the past year or so. Now they are scheduled to broadcast on Showtime and CBS in 2009. The first such broadcast is this coming Saturday with Shamrock vs. Diaz.
I saw a portion of the press conference a few weeks back. I think the photo above sums it up nicely. You have the older humble Shamrock going against the young brash Diaz.
There were some other somewhat entertaining parts to the presser. I particularly liked when Shamrock compared Diaz to one of his young sons. That being said the young Diaz is 7-1 over the past three years, and the only loss came via a TKO stoppage due to a cut. On the other hand, Shamrock is just 2-2 during this time frame.
I was interested about the betting line. At press time, I find it hard to believe, but there is not a widely publicized betting line established yet. I’m sure there will be by Friday but this is a nationally televised fight.
