Oh, the ongoing saga of “the Cutler bet“. The Denver Broncos said Tuesday they would grant Jay Cutler his request and try to trade the quarterback.
Soon after a report surfaced saying that Cutler was surprised by Bowlen’s declaration. Apparently, recently Cutler had packed up his car in Nashville and had it shipped to Denver. The rumor is he intended to show up for the team’s first minicamp on April 17th.
Just when I thought it couldn’t get any uglier. You might think that maybe things can be reconciled now. If Cutler is willing to show-up and the Broncos claimed he was their guy, maybe it is all just one big issue of communication. Yeah, I don’t think so. Remember when Brandon Marshall wasn’t picking up his cell phone after falling through his plasma TV… maybe there is just terrible cell-reception in Denver. I don’t know, I’ve never been.
If you haven’t noticed Cutler doesn’t take well to these situations. Having your boss of all boss’ saying you are as good as gone probably won’t sit well with Jay.
It appears the teams most likely to land Cutler are the Jets, Bears, Bucs and Lions. I have also heard the ‘Skins mentioned as a top contender.
Interestingly enough the Jets, Bears, Bucs and Lions all pick at #17-#20 in the first round. This means that it could come down to what each team is willing to give up in addition to that first round pick.
I think there is something else that could potentially come into play. The relationships that Josh McDaniels has with prospective buyers.
Is McDaniels still salty towards Belichick? Belichick is friends with new Lions head coach Jim Schwartz but has a bitter rivalry with Jets head man Eric Mangini.
On the other hand, McDaniels could potentially try to bury Cutler in the worst possible situation. (Remember when the Colts dumped Marshall Faulk to the Rams.) This would likely avoiding the media capital of the world New York.
Lastly, McDaniels could just take the best offer… but that’s no fun to speculate about…
