The Broncos have cut seven players this week, four of whom were defensive starters last year (five of the players started at least once game last season).
On Monday the Broncos cut Dewayne Robertson. Robertson was acquired from the Jets last season and was scheduled to make $16 million this coming season.
Other casualties on Monday included linebackers Niko Koutouvides and Jamie Winborn; with a cost saving total of around $5 million. Safety Marquand Manuel and defensive end John Engelberger; added nearly $4 million in relief against the cap. Lastly, tight end Nate Jackson was due to make around $1 million this coming season.
All in all a pretty hefty dumping.
Late yesterday, new GM Brian Xanders and new coach Josh McDaniels let loose another defensive player, Dre’ Bly. This brings the total defensive starters cut to four as Bly, Winborn, Robertson and Manuel all started last season for Denver. Bly was due for $6.8 million against the $123 million salary cap next season.
It looks like defensive coordinator Mike Nolan is having some say out in Denver. It can’t be a bad thing after last seasons defensive debacle.
Under Nolan, the Broncos will eventually make the switch to a 3-4 defense. It won’t happen over night and for the 2009 season they will likely use a hybrid defense comprised of both 3-4 and 4-3 schemes.
Now that’s change the Bronco’s fans can believe in.
