Favorite quotes from the A-Rod, Gammons interview

I’m sure everyone had seen the A-rod interview with Peter Gammons at this point.  I want to point out my two favorite parts of the interview.

PETER GAMMONS: What kind of substances were you taking?
ALEX RODRIGUEZ: Peter, that’s the thing. Again, it was such a loosey-goosey era. I’m guilty for a lot of things. I’m guilty for being negligent, naive, not asking all the right questions. And to be quite honest, I don’t know exactly what substance I was guilty of using.

Loosey-goosey? Really? This quote came directly after Alex stumbled over his words in the beginning of the interview. He recovered well but pulled ‘loosey-goosey’ out of nowhere. We have all heard the saying. I didn’t expect to find it on the Merriam-Webster website:

: notably loose or relaxed : not tense <a loosey–goosey attitude>
Sounds like Texas to me. That $252 million contract would make me feel “lossey-goosey” down there in Arlington, among other things. No matter how much this made me laugh, for A-rod, if this was one of the low points than I think he’d take that and view this whole thing as a PR victory.
PETER GAMMONS: Are you worried at all what it’s going to be like those nine years in New York?
ALEX RODRIGUEZ: Look, I think New Yorkers like honesty. I think they like people that say the truth. I also think they like great players that know how to win. And I think winning’s the ultimate medicine we can take here. If we can win a championship, if we can play well, if we can play well down the stretch, I think New Yorkers love to forgive you.  And right now, I made a mistake. I was stupid. I was an idiot, all these things. And I think New Yorkers can probably relate with that every once in a while.
You have to hear the audio to get the full effect of this one. There was a bit of a pause in between ‘that’ and ‘every’. Read that paragraph and pause after ‘that’… it doesn’t sound so great. First of all, this was the first questions from Gammons that really started to dig deeper. Once again, A-rod handled it well and if this was the worst of it. He did a brilliant job. Regardless it made me chuckle for sure as Alex had to recover from nearly calling New Yorkers both “stupid” and idoit(s)”.

Keep in mind Alex did not merely read from a piece of paper like Pettitte did. This took a tremendous amount of courage. Although I am certainly nitpicking here; it really could not have gone much better.
