Back up the MLB award train here. I almost wrote a quick qwip this morning about how they shouldn’t even wait until this afternoon to unveil the Manager of the Year awards. Clearly it would be Joe Maddon and Charlie Manuel.
These are suppose to be regular season awards though and that is clearly what they are. You can still make a case for Manuel but not as strong as that of Piniella.
Maddon took this award home by June 1st barring a monumental collapse in the AL East. Piniella was on the verge of becoming a hero in Chicago when his team did undergo their perennial collapse.
This really does get me to thinking; why should Piniella be remembered as the best manager of 2008 when his team crapped the bed in the playoffs. Where is Manuel’s name in the record books?
I guess he will just have to cry himself to sleep each night while making sure to becareful to not get any tears on his World Series ring.
